For many generations it seems that women wore flowing garments, dresses, or skirts, whilst only men wore trousers. The long awaited European soccer extravaganza finally got underway on the night of 8th June with an opening game between one of the tournament’s co-hosts Poland and the 2004 surprise package Greece. The match was preceded by a very colourful opening ceremony which featured song and dance, works of choreography depicting the UEFA colours and those of the two host nations; Poland and Ukraine. It had to come with the same glamour, considering it was the biggest ever tournament to be held in East and Central Europe.

The world governing body FIFA had warned of stern action being taken against racists but just a day before kickoff, some black Dutch players were subjected to racist chants during their final by sexy girls in preparation run off by some fans in Krakow. So far this has been the only dark spot of the event which happens to be the biggest of its kind in the continent.

There are a total of 16 teams taking part in the tourney that runs for three weeks, with a final in Kiev culminating one of the world’s most competitive sports events. Prior to the tournament, bookmakers had placed Spain as favourites, slightly ahead of Germany. Most people know the name Lacoste and recognize the crocodile icon but many are unaware of the origins of this most prestigious label. The founder of the Lacoste brand, Renee Lacoste, was by all accounts a fantastic tennis player and could be said to have invented sportswear.
